The All-Star break is almost upon us and that means the trade deadline is not far behind it. With the struggles of Joey Gallo, the Yankees have been rumored to be looking at options to upgrade their outfield. The Yankees are reportedly willing to deal Gallo, and the name they’re most linked to acquire is current Kansas City Royal Outfielder, Andrew Benintendi. Despite owning the best record in baseball and having a huge division lead, adding more firepower would go a long way for the Yankees World Series dreams.
New York Daily News reporter Kristie Ackert, said the other day, “The Yankees have had ‘on-going’ talks with the Royals about Andrew Benintendi over the last few weeks.” Ackert also went on to say, “The Royals are looking to flip the All-star outfielder for prospects to help their rebuild and have had scouts on every level of the Yankees system since the beginning of the season looking for possible fits.” The Yankees are loaded with prospect talent, the question is though, are they willing to part with a big name?
The Royals are believed to be asking for high offers on Benintendi, per Ackert. Benintendi is no doubt one of the top trade targets among contending teams around the league. An issue is that he will be a free agent following this season. So, you could trade one of your top prospects to acquire him and then watch him walk away in free agency. But, in a season where you’re in top tier contention for a World Series Championship, if you think this guy is the missing piece for your team, you go get him. A top prospect is nice and intriguing, but, if you think the established player will help bring you a ring this year, you send them that prospect. The Yankees are in prime position for a long-awaited 28th championship, it is time for general manager Brian Cashman to go all in. It would also be wise for him to take advantage of the marvelous season Aaron Judge is having. The leading MVP candidate could unfortunately be on another team next season.
The contact-hitting lefty is putting together a nice season for the Royals. This season he’s hitting .314, with 14 doubles, 3 home runs, 37 RBIs, 37 walks, and a .784 OPS. Along with good defense, Benintendi earned himself a reserve nod in the upcoming All-Star game. His high contact would be a very welcome addition to a Yankees lineup full of sluggers, and a team that sometimes seems too reliant on the long ball. It also never hurts adding another lefty hitter in Yankee Stadium. With only three weeks until the deadline, Andrew Benintendi watch is officially on for Yankees fans.
