On Monday, The Pittsburgh Steelers released their depth chart for the 2022 season, announcing former Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills quarterback Mitch Trubisky as the #1 quarterback for Mike Tomlin’s squad. The release of the list provides clarity on the most highly contested Quarterback battles of this offseason.
The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Mitch Trubisky on March 17, 2022 to a two-year contract. The former second round pick seemed poised to be Ben Roethelisberger’s replacement in Pittsburgh until the Steelers drafted the University of Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett in the first round of the 2022 draft a month later.
Since training camp started, all eyes were on Saint Vincent, the Steelers’ training grounds for the most hotly contested starting spot behind center, with newcomers Trubiksy and Pickett facing against Steelers long-term back up Mason Rudolph for the #1 spot.
Monday’s depth chart revealed that Trubisky would be the starter for the Steelers opener against The Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, September 11. But maybe more surprisingly, the depth chart listed Rudolph as second, ahead of first round pick Pickett.

A lot of criticism has been surrounding Kenny Pickett’s stock in the league, despite his incredible numbers at Pitt. Due to his small hands and lack of competition in college, some doubted his ability to lead an NFL franchise. Throughout preseason, Pickett continuously proved his strengths, finishing as the 11th top passer of all quarterbacks with 3 touchdowns and a passer rating of 124.7. Trubisky himself also performed exceptionally with a QBR of 115.2.
Mitch Trubisky was also announced as one of the captains for the Steelers for the 2022 season. With an impressive preseason behind him, Trubisky is set to start this weekend. With targets like Dionte Johnson, Chase Claypool, Najee Harris, and second round draft pick George Pickens, we could see an impressive first season in Pittsburgh from Josh Allen’s backup. If he doesn’t perform well or gets injured, the Steelers have an excellent back up in Kenny Pickett, despite the depth chart’s listings.
