It was a day highlighted by the rookies as the New York Giants beat the Baltimore Ravens 24-20 at the Meadowlands.

With Baltimore leading the contest 20-17 with 3:04 left, the Ravens collapse began. Lamar Jackson on a third-and-5 botched the snap, then subsequently threw an interception to Julian Love, setting up the G-Men in the red zone. Daniel Jones had thrown an interception in the endzone to Marcus Peters, but it was called back for defensive pass interference. All of a sudden, the Giants had a real shot, and they capitalized with a Saquon Barkley superman-like leap for the 1-yard score. That was the first time that New York had led in the contest.

Lamar Jackson had one more opportunity to respond with 1:43 left, but on second-and-10, he got beat by a rookie. Kayvon Thibodeaux emerged and he not only sacked Lamar Jackson, but he also forced a fumble. Leonard Williams recovered the ball after multiple Ravens could not hold onto it. The timeouts did not matter in the end as Barkley ran for a first down to the Baltimore 2-yard line with 1:24 left, and that was all she wrote. This is the first time since 2008 that the franchise has started its season with a 5-1 record. Thibodeaux was seen crying on the field after Big Blue sealed the win. He confirmed in the locker room after the game that he did in fact cry and said “cool guys cry.”

Offensively, it was the youngsters who came up big for the Giants with both receiving touchdowns coming from rookies. With 3:32 left in the second quarter, Wan’Dale Robinson capped the longest drive of the first half with a 5-yard touchdown. The 21-year old  said “it’s really hard to put into words, I still kind of don’t even remember after I scored it, it was kind of a blur so, it was just a great feeling.” Rookie tight end, Daniel Bellinger, sparked the Giants’ comeback down 20-10 with 6:07 left in the game as he scored his third touchdown of the season, finishing a 12-play 75-yard drive.

Before then, it was Baltimore who sat in the driver’s seat as they once again ran through Lamar Jackson. He finished the afternoon with 210 yards passing, 77 yards rushing yards, and one touchdown throw to Mark Andrews. Jackson however was burnt by turnovers, finishing with two fumbles, and a interception. Andrews seemed to be the one receiver that the Giants could not contain as he finished with 7 catches on 11 targets for 106 yards and the 12-yard score in the fourth. Every other Ravens receiver was held to under 30 yards as Jackson misfired on 15 of his 32 throws. Kenyan Drake was a pleasant surprise for Baltimore, as he topped 100 yards for the first time this season.

Saquon Barkley compiled 22 rushes for 83 yards and a touchdown, along with catches on all three of his targets for 13 yards. “Credit to Baltimore – they did a good job in the first half but in the second half, we were able to get a rhythm and a feel. Not just myself, but get on time with all the linemen and tight ends,” Saquon said in his post-game press conference.

Despite the win, the Ravens outgained New York 406 to 238 in total yards, including a 128-yard gap in rushing (211-83 BAL).

We’re going to compete. We’re going to compete for 60 minutes and try to give the fans something to be proud about,” Daniel Jones told reporters after the win.

When head coach Brian Daboll was asked what to make of their 5-1 start after winning only four games last year, he said “go into work tomorrow and get better.”

The 5-1 Giants now set their sights to Jacksonville as they now prepare for Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars next Sunday afternoon.
