MLB: San Diego Padres at New York Mets
Jacob deGrom has exercised the opt-out clause in his contract with the Mets and has become a free agent.
As expected, deGrom has will forego the final year and $30.5 million remaining on contract with the Mets to test the waters in open market this offseason.
The 34-year-old ace was yet again dominant this past season, finishing with a 3.08 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 102/8 K/BB ratio over 64 1/3 innings (11 starts).
DeGrom will seek a massive contract as the #1 starting pitcher on the market. It’s possible that he winds up returning to New York given Steven Cohen’s willingness to spend on his roster, but the Mets currently have a ton of money tied up.
His health will always be a question mark, but wherever the phenom lands, he’ll ink a monster multi-year deal.
