Justin Verlander (American League) and Sandy Alcantara (National League) have been named the 2022 Cy Young Award winners. Both decisions were unanimous (30 votes.)
This is the third time that Verlander has won the award. The 39-year-old was dominant after coming back from Tommy John surgery; compiling an MLB best 1.75 ERA and 0.83 WHIP in 175 innings while also playing an instrumental role in the Astros World Series title. It’s the first time a player has won the Cy-Young while not pitching the previous season. Verlander, currently on the open market, is seeking a multi-year deal in free agency.
White Sox phenom Dylan Cease finished second with Blue Jays Alek Manoah landing in third.
As for the latter, it’s the first time that Alcantara has won the award. The 27-year-old was a true workhorse, throwing 228 2/3 innings for the Marlins in 2022, registering a 2.28 ERA and 0.98 WHIP
Southpaws Max Fried (Braves) finished second with Julio Urias (Dodgers) coming in third.
