Former NFL Player Charged With Kidnapping

Former Ole Miss and NFL player Jerrell Powe is under arrest on federal kidnapping charges.

According to Ridgeland Police the 35-year-old was encountered at a Chase Bank in Ridgeland. Authorities said that an accomplice, Gavin Bates, was arrested and charged with kidnapping as well.

The men are accused of abducting a man in Laurel, Mississippi, driving to a bank in Ridgeland and demanding that he withdraw an undetermined amount of money.

The victim wasn’t harmed. Both men are expected to make their first court appearances today.

Powe, a standout at Ole Miss played for the Rebels for three seasons. He was named a member of the All-SEC second team in ’09 and ’10.

The Chiefs selected the defensive tackle in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL draft, and the Mississippi native would go on to play sparingly for the next three seasons in Kansas City. He spent ’14 with the Texans and had a cup of coffee with the Commanders during the ’15 preseason.

He announced his retirement from football in 2017.
