Major League Baseball is introducing a numbers of new regulations for the 2023 season, but it’s extra innings format is officially here to stay.

The leagues Joint Competition Committee voted unanimously on Monday to make the extra-inning rule permanent, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN.

As previous years, a runner will be placed at second base at the start of every extra-inning game for all regular season games moving forward. The MLB first used the tiebreaker rule during the 60-game pandemic season in 2020, and now it sticks around for the foreseeable future.

Approximately 10 percent of regular season games in 2023 went to extra innings.

Rogers also adds that the committee voted unanimously to allow position players to pitch only in extra innings or in the ninth inning when their team is either leading by at least 10 runs or anytime their team is trailing by at least eight runs.

On top of those changes, MLB is introducing a pitch clock, bigger bases and defensive shift limits in 2023.
