NFL: Denver Broncos at Baltimore Ravens
(New York, NY) – The Baltimore Ravens say they want Lamar Jackson back at QB next year, but a new report puts the situation on shaky ground.
According to NFL insider Jonathan Jones, the team didn’t include Jackson in the process when hiring a new offensive coordinator. Furthermore, Jordan Schultz of the Score reports coaching candidates weren’t assured that Jackson will return.
Following Greg Roman’s resignation following the Ravens playoff loss to the Bengals, head coach John Harbaugh said he intended to keep Jackson “involved” in their search.
“I did ask Lamar about it, and he will be involved in it. I’ll keep him abreast of what’s going on, and I’m sure he’ll have some input along the way,” Harbaugh told reporters on Jan. 29.
Jackson, a former Heisman trophy and NFL MVP winner, represents himself as opposed to working with an agent.
Prior to the start of last season he turned down an extension, feeling it wasn’t representative of his full value on the open market. Jackson ultimately suffered what ended up being a season-ending knee injury, in week 13.
There was some hope he could return for the playoffs, but ultimately didn’t even travel with the team to Cincinnati.
As to what this latest development means for contract negotiations, that’s unclear. He’s set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2023 season.
