(New York, NY) — Yordan Alvarez and the Houston Astros are off to an inauspicious start to begin their 2023 season.

According to Brian McTaggartis, Alvarez is dealing with left hand discomfort and will not resume swinging a bat for a few days.

“I felt a little bit of discomfort but it’s something we’re going to work on. I’m going to take the next couple of days off here like I did in the offseason to prepare.”

The Astros certainly won’t rush their superstar back considering there are five weeks remaining before the start of the season.

“The easy solution for that is just rest,” Alvarez said. “Obviously, I use my hands every day at the ballpark, but rest would be the biggest thing.”

It’s certainly developing story being that Alvarez also dealt with a lingering left hand issue throughout last season. It’s a troubling sign that the issue has resurfaced, but it’s still early enough that he should remain on track for Opening Day.

Astros manager Dusty Baker was asked if offseason surgery was necessary.

“(Doctors) said he didn’t need it,” Baker said. “It’s tough, but we have five weeks. He did pretty good last year, sometimes with a hurt hand.”

Despite sporadically missing time last season, the 25-year-old wound up hitting .306 with 37 homers and 97 RBI’s, finishing third in American League MVP voting.
