(New York, NY) — Houston Astros phenom Yordan Alvarez is still not swinging a bat, according to beat reporter Brian McTaggart.
The outfielder has been shut down since late February due to left hand discomfort, but the team said Tuesday, the hope is Alvarez will resume swinging a bat next week.
“It did flare up a little bit in the offseason, but I came to camp and spoke to the team and it’s just something we’re going to monitor,” Alvarez said through an interpreter. “I felt a little bit of discomfort but it’s something we’re going to monitor and work on.”
While the Astros are optimistic the 25-year-old will be ready for Opening Day, there is still not timetable for Alvarez return. There should be more clarity on his status once he resumes swinging.
The power hitting left hander notoriously dealt with a lingering left hand issue throughout last season, so it’s a troubling sign that the issue has resurfaced.
