(New York, NY) – With Derek Carr officially off the market, the Jets have turned up the urgency in acquiring Aaron Rodgers.
Team officials reportedly flew in Jets owner Woody Johnson’s plane to California to meet with Rodgers, according to ESPN. The Green Bay Packers who still hold Rodgers’ contract rights, have given the team permission to speak with the veteran signal caller.
Rodgers recently went on a “darkness retreat” to sit alone with no outside distractions hoping it would provide him clarity on his future. When he emerged from the retreat, there was no public decision made.
Appearing on NFL Live, insider Adam Schefter said earlier this week there was a “school of thought” that Rodgers “wanted to walk away from the game and retire.” He added, “If that’s the case, the Jets are especially making a sales pitch to him to convince him to try to play.”
But, if the Jets are flying to meet with Rodgers, one would assume he is willing to hear them out.
It’s not the first time the popular NFL insider suggested the four-time MVP could be hanging the cleats up.
Speaking with Hannah Storm, Schefter said, “I think in the end, my sense is ultimately it will come down to whether he wants to play elsewhere, which would be really the New York Jets, or whether he wants to retire. To me, those are the two most logical options and the two most likely scenarios here. But again, we have not heard from Aaron Rodgers himself.”
For once, let’s not speculate and let the cards play out. While the Jets appear to be the frontrunner to acquire Rodgers, no one knows for sure. For now? Patience is a virtue.
