MLB: Spring Training-New York Mets Workouts
(New York, NY) — The Mets will likely be without new acquired starting pitcher Jose Quintana until the All-Star break.
Mike Puma of the New York Post reports the team is shutting down the southpaw (rib) from throwing for three months. Puma adds that the veteran, who was diagnosed last week with a stress fracture on his left rib, won’t resume throwing until mid-June and wouldn’t be ready to return until the All-Star break. There should be an official timetable at some point this week.
When asked earlier Monday, Mets skipper Buck Showalter wasn’t ready to commit to Quintana starting the season on the injured list. However, it’s clear he was just waiting for more clarity before making the announcement.
Quintana signed a two-year contract worth $26 million in the offseason. He was slated to pitch for Colombia in the World Baseball Classic, but never got that far — making just one Grapefruit League appearance.
The 34-year-old compiled a 2.93 ERA across 32 starts with the Pirates and Cardinals last season. Tylor Megill and David Peterson are the favorites to replace Quintana in the rotation.
