(New York, NY) — Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins has been away from the defending NBA champs for 13 games and may not even return. But the reason why–other than “personal reasons” per the team–hasn’t been disclosed.
Until recently.
Marcus Thompson of The Athletic reported in an article that an anonymous Warrior said, “What he’s dealing with is some real (expletive),” when asked about Wiggins. Thompson added that the Warriors have been keen on protecting Wiggins’ privacy. All that is known at this point is that it’s serious, and that he has the full support of the organization.
Steph Curry himself spoke about Wiggins, saying, “Friend to friend, teammate to teammate, just sending him support. It’s a tough situation in terms of him being away for so long, but necessary. Life is bigger than basketball. Whatever him and his family are going through, that’s all that matters. Whenever he’s ready to come back, I’m sure he will. That’s how he’s built in terms of being available. I know he’s missing the vibe and being with us and we miss him too.”
But beyond Thompson’s reporting, there is a Twitter video from Hoops on Tap that claims to have the real reason: Wiggins’ wife Mychal cheated on him with his best friend, and that the couple’s two daughters aren’t even his. The rumor has been going viral on social media.
Now, this would be a vile rumor to lie about, and the video’s veracity cannot be verified, but it would qualify as something serious. However, Wiggins isn’t married, which has drawn a lot of attention for being an inaccuracy. Some in the comments also brought to attention how Wiggins stepped away from the team on February 13th, which is the day before Valentine’s Day.
We honestly may never know the truth.
