(New York, NY) — The Mavericks plan to protest their 127-25 loss to the Warriors after confusion over a call late in the third quarter.
The call in question led to Kevon Looney getting a wide-open dunk as the Mavericks, who believed possession should’ve been theirs, lined up on their offensive end.
“During the time out the official changed the call and never told us,” said Mavericks owner Mark Cuban on Twitter. “[the ref] just gave the ball to the warriors. Never said a word to us. They got an easy basketball. Crazy that it would matter in a 2-point game.”
Cuban added it is possibly the worst officiating non-call mistake in the history of the NBA.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr admitted he was confused while Luka Doncic and Jason Kidd both thought it was a clear mistake.
For Cuban, he has to file the protest in writing by tomorrow night. League commissioner Adam Silver will then notify the Warriors and each team will have five days to provide evidence to support their case.
Five days after that, Silver will make a decision. Worst case scenario, the Mavericks lose a $10,000 fee that comes with submitting a protest. A win would result in the money being refunded.
It has been 15 years since the last successful NBA protest.
