(New York, NY) — Julius Randle is trending upwards in his status for Saturday’s Game 1 matchup versus the Cavaliers.
The Knicks forward recently took off his walking boot and practiced with the team Tuesday, albeit in a limited capacity.
“Making steady progress. Taking it day-to-day,” coach Tom Thibodeau says. “He’s doing some running, shooting, scripting, that sort of thing.”
Randle is battling back from a sprained ankle suffered in the Knicks’ win over the Heat on March 29. He remains on the shelf as far as contact drills but continues to be evaluated closely and frequently by team doctors. Thibs being Thibs, wouldn’t commit to anything definitive on Randle’s status for Game 1.
“So when he’s ready to go, he’s ready to go,” Thibodeau noted. “But steady progress. Each day [is] a little bit better.”
Randle brings a ball-dominant scoring threat to the Knicks that leaves a gaping hole if he isn’t on the court, especially with the length Cleveland brings in the likes of Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. The 28-year-old had an excellent season, averaging a career-best 25.1 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.
Obi Toppin has been a viable option for Thibs, starting in place of Randle over the final five games of the year. Other potential substitutes include Josh Hart and RJ Barrett.
The Knicks open the playoffs against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday, April 15, at 6 p.m. ET.
