(New York, NY) — Monday marks the first day of NFL voluntary workouts and Aaron Rodgers won’t be in the building.
The teams top defensive lineman also won’t be attendance.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports Jets DL Quinnen Williams will not report for the team’s voluntary offseason program as he seeks a new contract.
Williams was already on record saying he wouldn’t attend if a new contract wasn’t in place, so this isn’t exactly a surprise. Currently set to play on the fifth year of his rookie contract, th 25-year-old is due to earn $9.594 million in 2023.
Considering Williams production last season, he figures to be seeking a deal in the range of $20MM annually. There are currently six defensive tackles who top that mark, including Jeff Simmons of the Titans, Daron Payne of the Commanders, and 49ers Javon Hargrave who all cashed in deals averaging $20+ million annually this offseason.
According to ESPN Jets writer Rich Cimini, the Jets want to tie pass rush down to a new contract, with both parties ‘in discussions for about two months’ but has more recently turned into a ‘game of “Can you top this?”‘
‘Everybody knows I’m a team guy, man,’ Williams told reporters in January.
‘But I do want to get a contract done before the offseason program. I do feel like I deserve to get a contract done before the offseason program just because I did everything right on the field and everything right off the field.
Williams was named a First-team All-Pro last season and also earned his first Pro Bowl nod. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the two sides come to terms on a deal after the draft.
