(New York, NY) — Lamar Jackson and the 49ers. Enough said.
Veteran sportscaster and former ESPN Sportscenter Anchor Dan Patrick says San Francisco has “monitored everything.” He went on to put quarterback Lamar Jackson in that category.
“…they explored that, or at least looked at that, they kicked the tires on that,” Patrick said. “And of course, you should do that, always try to improve.”
Jackson is still an unsigned free agent with restrictions that allow the Baltimore Ravens to match any offer sheet Jackson is given.
The Ravens have the choice to either match the contract or be awarded two first-round picks from the team who signed him.
While a Jackson-Niners partnership would spring San Francisco to the top of the odds as far as title favorites, the Niners seem to have found both their short-term and long-term solution.
Multiple reports say QB Brock Purdy is the future of the 49ers, while former third-overall pick Trey Lance has been the center of some recent trade conversations.
Purdy and Lance are by no stretch of the imagination the player that Jackson is. However, it may be smarter money-wise to keep the duo of QBs, rather than blow a lot of cap space, plus give two first-rounders for Jackson, no matter how dominant he used to look.
Where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire. But, sometimes, it’s just smoke.
And while there’s no denying Jackson’s caliber would be a huge addition, it’s nothing but a pipe dream.
