(New York, NY) — The 148th running of the Preakness Stakes gets underway this weekend.
The race is the second leg of the American Triple Crown and will take place on Saturday at the historic Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
All eyes are on Kentucky Derby winner Mage as he chases another victory in pursuit of the Triple Crown.
One horse Mage won’t be going up against is First Mission. The horse, which had the second best odds (5-2) to win the race, was starched on Friday morning due to a injury to his right leg.
Friday’s news comes just days after another horse was euthanized at Churchill Downs following a leg injury. It was the eighth horse to die in the last two weeks at the famous racetrack – seven died in the lead-up to the Kentucky Derby.
The last horse to complete the Triple Crown was Justify in 2018.
