(Anaheim, CA) — The Angels are losing a key utility man for the rest of the year.
Manager Phil Nevin said on Wednesday that Gio Urshela will likely miss the remainder of the season after fracturing his pelvis.
Urshela was injured in last Thursday’s win over the Texas Rangers, while stepping awkwardly at first base in an effort to beat out a ground ball. The next day he was placed on the 10-day injured list.
The 31-year-old met with two specialists who determined he won’t need surgery, but the recovery time will prevent him from playing again in 2023.
Urshela batted .299 with two home runs and 24 RBI in 62 games.
It’s a tough break for the Angels, who have mostly stayed healthy this season. Rookie Michael Stefani was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake.
