(Boston, Massachusetts) — Better late than never? Trevor Story (elbow) is taking a substantial step in his return to the diamond.
The Red Sox shortstop will take batting practice prior to Tuesday’s game against the Texas Rangers, according to manager Alex Cora.
“Twenty-five pitches, live BP,” Cora stated prior to Sunday’s game. Reliever John Schreiber, who’s been sidelined (back) since May, will throw the session.
Story has been on the injured list all season as he is recovering from right elbow surgery. The team has not yet established a timeline for the 30-year-old’s return.
The shortstop said on June 12 that he expects to be able to play the field sometime in August, but explained he is preparing for the possibility of being activated as a designated hitter at some point in July.
His advancement to facing live pitching is encouraging news, but the progression of his throwing program is likely of greater importance.
Story’s return to the lineup would be a major boost for a club fighting for an American League Wild Card spot.
