(New York, NY) — The captain is nearing a return.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday on the Talkin’ Yanks podcast that Aaron Judge (toe) is “getting close” to returning.

Boone was asked whether the beginning of the July 25 series against the Mets was a realistic return and the skipper didn’t rule it out.

While we still don’t have a clear timetable, it sounds possible Judge could return before the end of the month.

He’s progressed to taking batting practice last Friday and has also done some light running. Running the bases at full speed would seemingly be the last hurdle for the reigning American League MVP, but it’s uncertain when he might be ready for that.

The 31-year-old superstar has been on the shelf since June 3rd due to a torn ligament in his right big toe.

Before going on the injured list, Judge was hitting .291 with 19 home runs and 40 RBI through 49 games.

With the Yankees now at the bottom of the AL East, the captains return can’t come soon enough.
