(New York, NY) – The trade sending former New York Jets wide receiver Denzel Mims to the Detroit Lions is official.
As part of the trade, the Jets will receive a conditional sixth-round pick, as well as a seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Each club announced the trade today, after word first broke via several outlets Wednesday night.
Though the Lions paid next to nothing, it’s still impressive to see Jets GM Joe Douglas get anything in return for a player who was expected to be cut in the coming days.
Drafted 59th overall in 2020 out of Baylor, Mims largely struggled to get any production going while working with then-starting QB Zach Wilson. His rookie season was his best, in which he caught 23 balls for 357 yards. Mims also dealt with health issues during his time in New York, including hamstring and hand injuries, a concussion, and time spent on the COVID-19 list.
Jets’ head coach Robert Saleh was complimentary of Mims as he headed out the door, telling ProFootballTalk: “I appreciate Denzel. We wish him luck. He’s big, long, strong and fast. He’ll have an opportunity to play for another team and show why everyone’s so excited about him.”
This follows the Jets’ decision to move on from Ole Miss draftee Elijah Moore. Gang Green traded him to the Cleveland Browns earlier this offseason, sending him and a third round pick in return for a third rounder in the draft that was just completed in May.
Now, the newly-added Randall Cobb, Allen Lazard, and Mecole Hardman have less competition in terms of targets from Aaron Rodgers. The Jets just got training camp started today.
