NFL: New York Jets Training Camp
(Florham Park, NJ) – Left tackle Mekhi Becton is a major part of the New York Jets’ designs on winning a championship this season.
The massive and talented offensive lineman has also been a routine health risk, given his weight, and the pressure that puts on his surgically-repaired knee.
It was during the 2021 season when Becton first suffered a knee injury and had to be carted off the field. That resulted in knee surgery, and then he re-injured that same knee during last year’s training camp – with Becton spending the entire 2022 season on the injured list.
So what’s the latest issue? Well, per head coach Robert Saleh, Becton sat out practice today because his knee “wasn’t up for it today.” Saleh explained the coaching staff decided to hold Becton out of action as a result. Asked as a follow-up if this situation will last longer than one day, Saleh said he doesn’t think so, intimating the injury or discomfort is more “day to day.” And, Saleh added that hopefully he’s “out there tomorrow.”
The Jets’ head coach did confirm Becton’s current issue involves the same knee that was surgically repaired and then re-injured.
Saleh looked ahead regarding his tackle and said, “We’re all trying to pace it, trying to get him back up to full speed where he can play an entire game. So we’re just working with him, the doctors, our training staff, and coaches, trying to do the best we can play a football game.”
