MLB: Spring Training-New York Yankees-Workouts
(New York) — “Fire Cashman!” chants broke out at Yankees stadium after the Bombers fell to the Rays 5-2 on Tuesday night.
The MLB trade deadline came and went, and Brian Cashman inexplicably did nothing.
But don’t worry, the Yankees GM has a message for outraged fans.
“There’s nothing I can say to it other than that we’re out there fighting and competing and trying to hit that win column. And if you don’t, that’s what comes with it.”
“Stay tuned,” Cashman added. “I’m sure some people out there, you know, ‘Tear it down, sell.’ Other people are out there, ‘Add something big.’ Well, I couldn’t add. There wasn’t a big thing to add, to be quite honest, that was going to solve the immediate problems that we had.”
Stay tuned for what?
Cashman did utterly nothing to help his ballclub on trade-deadline day, outside of adding middle reliever Kenyan Middleton and Triple-A pitch Spencer Howard.
The Yankees entered the season with glaring offensive holes, that were only intensified as the season prolonged, but for some shocking reason, Cashman stayed mute.
“All those puzzle pieces can fall back into place. I know we’re a different team with (Aaron) Judge on us. He’s on us now again. Obviously, I know that people have seen how we’ve played without him and when we’ve played with him.”
Maybe someone in the most prestigious organization in the history of sports can explain to Cashman that this is not basketball or football. This is baseball – meaning the return of Judge won’t magically turn the Yankees into a World Series contender.
Even with the reigning American League MVP in the lineup every day, the Yankees are nothing more than a middling of the road ball club.
Eventually you are what your record says. Or in the case of the Yankees – your record over the last decade – and that’s zero championships.
Not only are the Bombers in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since 2016. At 55-52, they could finish with a losing record for the first time since 1992.
“I do think we have the talent; we do have the capabilities. It was like, ‘I’d rather just keep it and take a shot,’ to be quite honest. So, we’re going to obviously finish this off and see where it takes us.”
Take a shot at what? When will Brian Cashman wake up, look in the mirror, and realize he is dead wrong? At this rate? Never.
