NFL: San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Rams
(Florham Park, NJ) – In recent seasons, the knee jerk reaction to a QB injury has been well established.
Go to Twitter (now X) and send out a jocular tweet concerning a potential replacement. Years ago at the water cooler, the line would be – somebody give Jeff George a call!
Now, the cliche response when a QB goes down is: what’s Colin Kaepernick up to? Although that’s admittedly started to die down, given Kaep has been out of the league since the end of the 2016 season.
But the chorus is about to start up again, after Jets QB Aaron Rodgers was lost for the season in the media capital of the world.And – Kapernick’s agent or perhaps the player himself has made it clear he’s ready to step in for Gang Green.
On social media, several people have reported that Kaepernick reached out to the Jets following Rodger’s Achilles tendon injury. He apparently has the “desire” to make an NFL comeback.
But does he have the skills? Even during his most successful playing days, Kaepernick relied heavily on his legs and rushing ability. It’s fair to say that’s likely diminished at age 35 and after so many years away from the game.
It would certainly be a media circus, which is one of the main reasons Kaepernick never got another chance after leaving the 49ers.
Also, others have suggested the QB isn’t really that interested in playing anymore. He’s shifted to work as a civil rights activist and took a big payout from Nike to become one of their endorsees. It’s always crazy (and never boring) with the New York Jets. So maybe this makes some sense in a weird, bizarro world way. But it probably doesn’t.
