DETROIT — Marvin Jones is stepping away from football.
Jones, a 12-year veteran cites tending to family matters as to why he’s stepping away from the game, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports. He subsequently was released by the team.
Jones went on social media Tuesday afternoon to thank the team for its support.
“I just want to say that I have so much love and respect for the Ford Family, the city of Detroit, my teammates and coaches,” he wrote on Instagram. “To be brief, I am stepping away from the team to take care of personal family matters. Although this was no easy decision, I cannot be the person/player that I need to be for this team, as well as tend to my family from afar. This organization has been amazing showing love and support for myself and my family over the years and this time is no different. For that I am appreciative.”
Jones, 33, played sparingly this season with very little production. Jones re-signed with Detroit in April after spending the last two seasons with the Jaguars.
He didn’t travel with the Lions for their Week 7 matchup with the Ravens for personal reasons. It’s unclear if will be available to sign later in the season, but if not, he’ll end his second stint in Detroit with five catches for 35 yards and no touchdowns.
