(Bronx, NY) – New York City appears to be losing its “baseball” mayor.
No, Eric Adams is not leaving the job – he’s still in charge down at City Hall. But Sean “the Mayor” Casey will no longer be keeping office hours at Yankee Stadium. Speaking on his podcast Wednesday, Casey explained he wouldn’t return as hitting coach in 2024.
Casey came on board about halfway through this most recent regular season, as the Yankees were scuffling at the plate. Dillon Lawson had been fired, and the 49-year-old Casey (who had most recently worked as an analyst with MLB Network) took over the post. Eventually, the Yankees finished at 82-80, missing the playoffs for the first time in seven years.
On his podcast, Casey said he’d discussed a potential return with Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “(He) and I had talked about coming back next year and what that would look like,” Casey said. “I told him that I’m not going to be able to come back next year.”
Apparently, living in New York City is too much to ask, even if Casey enjoyed the job. The 49-year-old’s teenage daughters live in Pittsburgh, where Casey played one season.
He says spending eight months away from them is too much at this point. Still, Casey described working for the Bronx Bombers as among “the best experiences of my whole life.”
