NFL: AFC Divisional Round-Jacksonville Jaguars at Kansas City Chiefs
(New York, NY) – Patrick Mahomes is many things.
The former Super Bowl MVP, league MVP, and TV commercial star is perhaps already a future Hall of Famer. He’s also typically thought of as a calm and collected individual. The son of a former MLB pitcher, Mahomes has been around professional sports for most of his life. Perhaps that’s why his unhinged reaction to the Chiefs last-second loss against the Buffalo Bills was so unexpected. No one likes to lose, but Mahomes is typically much more reserved – at least publicly.
But after Kadarius Toney lined up offsides, and the resulting penalty negated what would have been the game-winning TD. To put it mildly, Mahomes lost it. He appeared to be screaming at the officiating crew, and even after that – while shaking hands with opposing QB Josh Allen – Mahomes couldn’t believe what had just happened. Cameras caught him telling Allen the ending was “the wildest f–king call I’ve ever seen. Offensive offsides in that moment, man … f–king terrible. F–king terrible, man.”
So we asked some of the staff members at 77 WABC what they thought of Mahomes reaction.
At the podium post game, Mahomes wasn’t any less heated. He continued to admonish the referee crew, saying “let us play the game. Then, whatever happens happens. That’s why last week, I didn’t say anything. Let us play. You want it to be about your team and their team — and see what happens. I want to go play … then see what happens at the end. Then, I can live with the results. The flag today was tough. Offensive offsides. You point to the ref, you’re good or not good. You have a discussion. That’s the ref’s job. For him to throw that flag, no explanation or anything. I saw the picture. He’s barely offsides. It didn’t affect the play at all. At all.”
