(Queens, NY) – Reports have said the New York Mets and slugger Pete Alonso haven’t discussed a potential contract extension this offseason.

And that comes after a regular season that saw the rumor mill swirling around Alonso – and trade talks with the Milwaukee Brewers. At the very least, it would seem the Mets are open to trading Alonso for a haul. If a local sports talk radio host is to be believed, it could also because Alonso might prefer to play elsewhere.

Sal Licata, a host on WFAN, has been quick to criticize Alonso in the past. This past summer, Licata suggested the Mets “don’t have a leader on the field,” and later in August said the Mets have a “toxic” clubhouse and that Alonso needs to be traded.

So, it’s perhaps not surprising that he decided to chum the airwaves on Thursday with some more speculation and commentary surrounding the Mets first baseman. NJ.com’s Manuel Gomez reports Licata said “I’m not 100% certain that Alonso is all about being a lifelong Met.” Licata went on to suggest he’s “heard” Alsono may prefer to play for the Yankees or Cubs.

Where that came from, other than Licata’s bruised, warped sports fan mind, is anyone’s guess. But the radio host has consistently made it his brand to throw out spicy Mets takes, in the hopes it grows his ratings.

We’ll have to see how that’s going over time – as Licata has been paired with Brandon Tierney – a Mets hater of the Yankees variety.
