WASHINGTON — It’s the most beautiful time of the year. The snow is falling. And people are inside their toasty homes — watching the NFL playoffs.
This is when boys become men. When dreams come true. Nightmares become realities. And for for some – a chance to hash out their differences.
The ongoing feud between Robert Griffin III and Jay Gruden took another ugly turn Thursday night when the former NFL quarterback put his ex-coach on blast for an incident that occurred back in 2014.
Griffin told a story on his podcast about Gruden and shared a clip on social media.
“Jay Gruden went to a press conference and he undressed me at that press conference in a way a coach should never undress his starting quarterback. It was after a game and I said in the press conference that ‘the best players in the NFL have the guys around them play at an extremely high level. No one is out there doing it on their own.’
What people don’t know is that the only reason I went to that press conference and said what I said to challenge my teammates through that press conference, was because Jay Gruden asked me to do that,” Griffin said.
“What hurt me about that after I did that in the press conference, not only did Jay Gruden not have my back, but he actually burned me with it the next day. He actually came out the next day and burned me in the media. He came out the next day in our team meeting room and burned me in front of my teammates.”
Gruden replied to the clip later that night, in a later deleted post:
“You weren’t good enough,” he wrote. “Kirk was better. Cleveland didn’t want you. Baltimore [didn’t] either. Quit blaming me.” He then posted to X “go race a pigeon” along with a clip of Griffin racing a bird. The tweet has already amassed over 22m impressions on social media.
Gruden and Griffin had been going back and forth on social media since Monday’s Eagles Buccaneers Monday Night Wild Card game.
“If I ever put a QB through what Philly is putting Jalen through , I apologize. Pick up a blitz !” Gruden wrote.
Griffin reposted Gruden’s message and wrote, “Say WHATTTT???” with a photo of himself tipping his glasses while incredulously looking into the camera.
“U weren’t prepared Robert ?” Gruden replied, to which Griffin wrote, “You told me you didn’t know how to coach a QB who could throw and run like me, so looks like you weren’t prepared Jay.”
So when you’re sitting down with your friends and family for the Divisional Round this weekend, enjoy the warm indoors — Griffin and Gruden’s icy relationship will likely continue.
