(New York, NY) – When it comes to professional sports, baseball’s uniforms are the most exposed. Between Spring Training, the regular season, and playoffs, fans have close to 200 TV episodes where the MLB jerseys are on display.
So, it’s fair to say fans are very familiar with their team’s uniforms. And, for a squad like the New York Yankees, it’s also true that uniform rarely changes. But here in 2024, the Bronx Bombers are making a tweak to their threads.
The Yanks’ iconic road uniform is still gray and navy blue. But the white and blue trim on the sleeves is gone. The trim, which dates back to the road uniforms in the late 70s, will be removed for a cleaner look that is monochromatic. In recent years the rival Boston Red Sox took a similar step, dropping the team’s sleeve trim and red drop shadow from the front-jersey lettering.
Meanwhile, the Mets made a minor tweak to their alternate black uniforms, which have been worn on Friday nights since being reintroduced by team owner Steve Cohen. For the 2024 season, the black logo’s white drop shadow is being removed.
Also, a brand new Mets uniform is coming in April. That’s when the Nike “city connect” Mets uniform will make its debut. In recent years, the league has been introducing these alternate jersey concepts for various teams, but the Mets’ version has yet to be unveiled.
Some have speculated the jersey could be based on something like the 1964-1965 World’s Fair in Flushing, the New York City skyline, or maybe even the 7-train. Some team’s uniforms have abandoned the team’s traditional color scheme – like the Colorado Rockies’ green uniforms referencing the state’s green license plates, and the Red Sox “City Connect” Boston Marathon jerseys – which are light blue and yellow.
