(Queens, NY) – As the MLB offseason nears its conclusion, it would seem the New York Mets roster is largely set under new President of Baseball Operations David Stearns.

He focused largely on run prevention – importing new pitchers for 3/5s of the starting rotation, adding bullpen arms, and signing defensive whiz Harrison Bader to hold things down in center. But what about the offense? That’s what fans have been saying – and if rumors hold true, their prayers could be answered.

Well, that may be overstating things a bit, but the Mets are reportedly discussing a potential deal with free agent J.D. Martinez. The outfielder/DH option could provide a veteran presence for the Mets’ lineup while also strengthening the team’s overall offensive profile. He played for the LA Dodgers last year, on a one-year $10 million contract. Martinez batted .271 with 33 HR and a .893 OPS. At age 36, it’s also possible he’s open to a part time role.

To date, Stearns has seemed hesitant to spend toward bringing in a DH. He may be more inclined to give the at bats to younger players like Mark Vientos or DJ Stewart, in a year where the Mets are entering with diminished expectations. Still, it seems New York’s roster isn’t set in stone, and Martinez may be emerging as a potential addition. Last month, Stearns addressed his mindset on roster construction: “Sometimes, sort of that bat-first player when we’re talking about a DH position, it can be helpful to rotate players through that. We haven’t made a firm decision on that one yet. I still think it’s a little bit to be determined and we’re still discussing.”

Pitchers and catchers report next week, so time is running out. Of course, that’s also potentially true for Martinez, as the veteran may prefer to ink a deal before the start of spring training.
