NEW YORK — The New York Jets Super Bowl run is back on.
And hopefully it lasts longer than four plays this time around. But right now, Gang Green is excited.
The air is fresh. The birds are chirping. And the team is healthy.
The party started Friday night when New York inked tackle Tyron Smith, formerly of the Dallas Cowboys. And it continued Monday after former Chargers WR Mike Williams signed a one year deal.
Williams, 29, put the final touches on the Jets offseason goal – acquiring Aaron Rodgers another offensive weapon.
“I just felt like it was a great fit for me,” Williams told reporters on Zoom Tuesday morning. “I feel like we got a pretty good opportunity in front of us. Looking forward to it.”
Williams cited wide receiver Garrett Wilson along with Rodgers as major reasons why he decided to join New York.
“Aaron, I want to be able to play with him. Pick his brain, learn from him. Playing alongside Garrett, kinda reminds me of Keenan a little bit. Similar style play, great route runners and I feel like we can complement each other in that area. The running game is pretty good, defense is elite so I just feel like we have a pretty good opportunity in front of us.”
The 6-foot-4 pass catcher tore an ACL in Week 3 last season, causing him to miss the remainder of the year. Williams said he’s 4.5 months out from his ACL surgery, but added that everything is on schedule and that he expects to be ready for Week
In 2022, the veteran missed four games plus the Chargers’ playoff loss. But from 2018 to 2021, he missed only three games. The Jets are taking on some risk, but they feel Williams’ size (6-foot-4) and field-stretching ability will add a different dimension to the offense.
The Jets offense suddenly looks a lot more appealing than the one that was on the field to close out the 2023 season.
But all that matters at the end of the day is the results on Sunday. Which haven’t been very fond to New York over the last decade.
