NEW YORK — The New York Mets season began without Kodai Senga atop their starting rotation. Four days later, their depth will be further tested, as the club could now be without Tylor Megill
The Mets right-hander departed after just four innings on Sunday against the Brewers because he “was tender in his shoulder area,” according to bench coach John Gibbons, who was filling in for suspended manager Carlos Mendoza in a 4-1 loss at Citi Field.
Megill struggled, and was removed after 78 pitches. He allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks. The 28-year-old was in and out of trouble all afternoon, but was able to limit the damage before the shoulder injury prompted his exit.
Gibbons said his starter would have remained in the game if he hadn’t mentioned the injury.
“I didn’t see any anything,’’ Mets catcher Narvaez said. “Actually, I thought his last inning was his best inning. He was more under control and throwing more strikes.”
Megill is now set to undergo and MRI on Monday. Expect the team to provide an update on his status as soon as one becomes available.
New York is 0-3 to start the season. It’s the first time since 2014 that the Mets have lost their first three games. They begin another three-game series against the Tigers on Monday night.
“It’s definitely not ideal. … We’ll just get right back at it tomorrow,” first baseman Pete Alonso said. “Honestly, we just need to keep playing hard and come ready to go tomorrow.”
