NFL: Atlanta Falcons at New York Jets
After the spectacular preseason show that fourth string quarterback Chris Streveler put on in all three games, the New York Jets added him to the list of players being cut by the team. Streveler will certainly find a new home after what he did for Gang Green this August.
Streveler, the former Canadian Football League quarterback, put the team on his back in this preseason for the Jets leading them to comeback wins in all three preseason games.
In the first game against the Philadelphia Eagles, he connected with wide receiver Calvin Jackson Jr. with just 21 seconds left in the fourth quarter to cement the 24-21 win. The week after, he entered the game and immediately sparked another comeback with a 34 yard strike to tight end Lawrence Cager. The Jets went on to win that one 24-17.
Finally, he did it again this past Sunday with a 31-27 victory over their intra-city rival, the New York Giants. He again found Calvin Jackson Jr. in the endzone with only 22 seconds left, Jackson Jr. was also cut by the team.
Streveler finished this preseason going 24 for 33 with 277 yards passing, five touchdowns, and had one interception. Also, add to that the fact that he led the team in rushing with 71 rushing yards on nine carries.
Given the fact that veteran quarterback Joe Flacco is already the back up, and Mike White having already been accustomed to the offense, it was going to be hard for Streveler to make the cut. He certainly put the team on his back in this preseason.
If he doesn’t get put on the Jets’ practice squad, I’m sure he will be a valuable asset for another NFL team’s 53-man roster.
Streveler told the media “I’m just so thankful to even be given the opportunity to be here in the first place so I don’t take anything for granted and I put my best foot forward everyday”.
It will be interesting to see where the 2017 MVFC Offensive Player of the Year ends up. The Jets made 27 roster moves to get down to the 53-man limit by the deadline which ended at 4:00 p.m. today.
Other notable players who were cut:
- 2020 fourth round pick, running back La’Michael Perine.
- Cornerback Javelin Guidry, who played in 26 games during his time with the Jets. He also forced four fumbles.
- Outside linebacker Bradley Anae, who excited in camp but had to battle with an edge class that already has a lot of depth.
