A former University of Virginia football player is suspected of killing three members of the team and wounding two other students on campus late Sunday night.

Police identified the suspect as Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., who has been taken into custody after a manhunt shut down the U-Va. campus in Charlottesville for nearly 12 hours. Jones, 22, was listed as a running back on the team’s 2018 roster.

Lavel Davis Jr. (junior, wide receiver) Devin Chandler (junior, wide receiver,) and D’Sean Perry (junior, defensive dnd) were all killed in the tragic incident. The University of Virginia president Jim Ryan said two other students were shot and hospitalized; one of which is in stable condition, and the other in critical condition. Ryan did not identify the names of the surviving victims.

The shooting took place on a charter bus after students returned to campus from a field trip, which occurred in a parking garage around 10:30 PM Sunday night.

“Although we do not yet have a full understanding of the motive and circumstances surrounding these events, police are investigating as we speak,” Ryan said during Monday’s news conference. “This is an unimaginably sad day for our community. The entire university community is grieving this morning. My heart is broken for the victims and their families and for all those who knew and loved them, and they are all in my prayers.”

The Cavaliers are scheduled to play arch rival Virginia Tech on Saturday. Stay tuned for more details on this story.
