(New York, NY) – New York Yankees right hander Frankie Montas will undergo shoulder surgery, and will miss most, if not all of the season.
Yankees Manager Aaron Bone told reporters Wednesday, “Best case is he (Montas) would be back late in the season.”
Before surgery was confirmed, pitching coach Matt Blake had suggested Montas’ going under the knife wouldn’t necessarily end the pitcher’s season.
When Montas went down with injury toward the end of last season, team officials said he was dealing with shoulder inflammation. Beyond that, details have been scarce. But it would seem rest and rehab haven’t had the desired impact now that surgery has been scheduled. At one point there was optimism that Montas could be ready to go in May.
His injury further highlights the Yankees middling depth at starting pitcher, especially considering fellow starter Nestor Cortes Jr. will miss the World Baseball Classic, due to a strained hamstring.
Montas, 29, was acquired from Oakland on Aug 1. and went 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA in eight starts with the Yankees. He didn’t pitch after Sept. 16 due to inflammation in his pitching shoulder.
