Walker Buehler’s Season Likely Over?

The Dodgers have officially placed RHP Walker Buehler on the 60-day injured list with right elbow UCL reconstruction.

Remember, Buehler underwent Tommy John surgery last August and will likely now miss the entirety of the 2023 season. There’s a chance he can return in August/September, but Dodgers’ fans shouldn’t count on it.

His last start came in June of last year, but the team wasn’t certain of the severity of his injury. It’s 28-year-old’s second time getting Tommy John. He’s pitched in just 200+ innings once in his career.

These days the surgery typically entails a 14-16 month rehab timetable, though it can be longer for the second go around. Buehler had his first Tommy John surgery soon after being drafted in the first round in 2015.

The Kentucky native pitched to an uninspiring 4.02 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 65 innings of work last year.

Barring any setbacks, he should be able to return for spring training in 2024. That will be his final season before becoming a free agent.

Los Angeles now moves forward with Clayton Kershaw, Julio Urias, Tony Gonsolin, Noah Syndergaard and Dustin May as their projected starters heading into Spring Training.

The Dodgers are currently listed at +700 (FanDuel Sportsbook) to win the World Series in 2023.
