Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters on Tuesday that Gavin Lux will miss the entire 2023 season after tearing the ACL in his right knee.
The former top prospect was carted off the field of Monday’s Cactus League contest against the Padres after his right knee buckled while ducking to avoid a throw on the basepaths. Roberts said after the game that Lux “heard something pop” on the outer part of his knee. He’ll undergo surgery on March 7.
The 25-year-old was set to take over as the everyday shortstop for the Dodgers this spring after the departure of Trea Turner. Lux took to twitter this morning to thank the Dodgers faithful. “Just wanted to thank everyone for the thoughts and prayers, means more than you all know!”
The first-round pick out of high school by the Dodgers in 2016, hit .276 , with six home runs, 42 RBI, and seven stolen bases in 471 plate appearances last year. He led the National League with seven triples.
It’s unclear how the Dodgers will move forward long term, but recently acquired Miguel Rojas figures to take over shortstop duties in LA for the time being. Chris Taylor is another potential candidate.
