NFL: Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers
(New York, NY) — The Detroit Lions have started contract talks to bring back fan favorite running back Jamaal Williams. Speaking Wednesday, GM Brad Holmes said there is “mutual interest” between both parties.
Williams, 27, is set to hit free agency once the new league year turns over on March 15th. The veteran running back signed with the Lions two years ago, having his coming out party in 2022. He rushed for 1,066 yards, to go along with 17 touchdowns. That mark led the NFL and is now a franchise record for the Lions.
Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders was the previous record-holder, accomplishing the feat during the 1991 season.
“I really just want to stay with Detroit if I can,” Williams expressed. “Really just stay here and make my mark here. I really want to finish (my career) here if I could.”
“I understand it’s a business and the team has to do what’s best for them and I have to do what’s best for me, too, but I just really want us to come to a mutual agreement and just get it done and just get back to playing football.”
If re-signed, Williams once again projects to split touches with counterpartner D’Andre Swift. The Lions currently rank 10th in available cap space.
