(New York, NY) – The New York Jets are reportedly cutting wide receiver Braxton Berrios, one year after signing him to a $12 million contract. The move will save the club $5 million, and provides an additional $6 million in cap space. Many figure the club is maneuvering its cap in anticipation of a trade for Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
On that front, NFL insider Dianna Russini of ESPN reports Jets officials are optimistic they’re on the cusp of trading for Rogers. This follows meetings between Rogers and Jets owner Woody Johnson, which have been described as “extensive.” And trade talks had been underway between both clubs regarding potential compensation prior to those meetings. It would seem the Rogers era could be looming in New York, ending the Zach Wilson era, and kicking off Jordan Love’s time as starter in Green Bay.
The Jets started the day with just over $3 million in cap space, so the release of Berrios more than doubled New York’s available spending.
As for Berrios, he was a first-team All-Pro as a returner in 2021 but failed to make a similar impact in 2022. His receiving numbers also declined, although the Jets dealt with subpar QB play for most of the season. Over four seasons in New York, the 27-year-old caught 107 passes for 1,065 yards and five touchdowns.
