(New York, NY) — The Patriots have been quiet this past offseason but that could be for good reason.
According to Doug Kyed, New England has been “in close contact” with a few free agent wide receivers. The list includes Odell Beckham Jr. and JuJu Smith-Schuster.
Before Pats fans get excited, money will of course be a focal point here. The team let new Raiders wide receiver Jakobi Meyers walk for a relatively measly three-year deal worth 33 million dollars. The resumes of Beckham Jr. and Smith-Schuster exceed that of Meyers’ by a considerable amount. Both free agent receivers have at least one thousand-yard season under his belt to Meyer’s zero. Meyers has also failed to be a large contributor to a super bowl-winning team like Beckham Jr. and Smith-Schuster have.
The Patriots do have some history of paying big names big money, as evidenced by Tom Brady, Darrelle Revis and even kicker Stephen Gostkowski one year.
But for what the Patriots’ offense looked like this past year, New England, as well as its fans, recognize a splash needs to be made immediately. And the answer may not lie in an unproven wide receiver one and a player coming off a torn ACL.
DeAndre Hopkins, anyone?
