(New York, NY) — Brandon Nimmo has taken his first step towards Opening Day.
Mets manager Buck Showalter said Wednesday that he hopes Nimmo (knee, ankle) will be ready to return to Grapefruit League action this weekend.
The outfielder was able to play in a minor league game on Wednesday as he continues working his way back from a sprained right knee and ankle. Nimmo sustained the injury sliding into second base last Friday and had to be helped from the field.
After undergoing imaging on Saturday, it was revealed that the 29-year-old had a low grade sprain of the knee and ankle and was week-to-week.
The seven-year veteran believes he will be ready for Opening Day as well.
“In my heart of hearts, yeah, I do think [I’ll be ready for Opening Day]. Obviously, we have to see how it goes, but yeah, right now I definitely think that I’ll be ready for Opening Day.”
The center fielder signed an eight-year, $162 million deal to remain in Queens this offseason after producing a 5.1-WAR and finishing fifth in the NL in OBP.
Tommy Pham, Tim Locastro and Mark Canha all figure to see increased playing time if Nimmo were to miss any regular season time.
