(New York, NY) — The Yankees are making one more roster transaction before they open their regulars season vs. the Giants on Thursday.

The Bombers announced today that they are signing outfielder Franchy Cordero, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.  It’s a split deal that’ll pay Cordero $1MM in the big leagues and at a $180K rate in the minors.

It looks the 28-year-old will get the spot that appeared set for Estevan Florial. If that’s the case, Florial, who is out of options, will likely go on waivers. It’s possible the Yankees could carry both on the roster to begin the season — meaning 14 position players and only 12 pitchers.

Cordero had a terrific offensive spring for the Orioles but also had an impressive spring last season for the Red Sox and it didn’t at all carry over into the regular season.

The journeyman’s last two years in the big leagues came with in Boston, after brief tenures with the Royals and Padres. He figures to be nothing more than a rotational outfielder.
