(New York, NY) — Big men get paid too.
The Giants have re-signed DT Dexter Lawrence to a four-year contract extension worth $90 million with $60 million in guarantees.
The 25-year-old was heading into the fifth-year option on his rookie contract and was slated to earn $10.753 million this season.
It was a matter of when, not if, for the Giants top defensive player. He was planning to not report for the offseason program, but he surely will now, most likely with a smile across with face.
Giants General Manager Joe Schoen emphatically stated all offseason that he considered a new deal for Lawrence to be a top priority, and now that deal is done.
The per-year average of $22.5 million makes Lawrence the NFL’s third-highest-paid defensive tackle, behind only Aaron Donald ($31.6 million average) and Jeffery Simmons ($23.5 million), matching Daron Payne of the Commanders.
Lawrence was a second-team All-Pro this year in Wink Martindale’s defense, notching 7.5 sacks and 28 quarterback hits while having a career-high 91.6 PFF defensive grade.
The Giants selected Lawrence with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft — a pick they acquired from the Browns in the trade that sent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to Cleveland.
Next up? Saquon Barkley.
