MLB: Spring Training-Miami Marlins Workouts
(New York, NY) — The Miami Marlins will be making a little history tonight at loanDepot park.
The team plans to start its top prospect Eury Perez.
“I have bad news for you,” Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara, his mentor, said in a video to Perez . “I am going to have to see your face every day now. My brother, do you think you are ready to pitch in the Majors? I’m happy for you, an opportunity well deserved. I’ll see you soon. Love you, man.”
At 20-years, 27-days old, he’ll become the youngest pitcher in franchise history. The late Jose Fernandez was 20-years, 250-days old when he made his debut in 2013.
“Exciting for him, exciting for the organization,” manager Skip Schumaker said. “Our top prospect has a bright future. Enormous talent. We’re looking forward to seeing him take the mound.”
In his second season at Double-A Pensacola, Pérez had gone 3-1 with a 2.32 ERA and an 0.81 WHIP in six starts. The 20-year-old hasn’t thrown a single inning at Triple-A and hasn’t thrown more than 78 in a minor-league season.
The six-foot-eight flame thrower takes to the mound against the Cincinnati Reds starting at 6:40.
