(New York, NY) — There’s a story here…I just can’t tell you what, exactly.
New York Mets owner Steven Cohen tweeted on Tuesday that he intends to hold a press conference prior to the team’s game on Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers. Cohen said fans will “get it from me straight.”
It’s unclear if Cohen intends to announce any personnel changes (perhaps the firing of Buck Showalter?), or if he’ll simply face the press and talk about other things regarding the team’s performance.
Mets fans will learn more Wednesday.
“When things get really bad, I’m not going to blow up,” Cohen told The Post’s Joel Sherman earlier this month. “I don’t think that’s the proper response.
The Mets enter Wednesday with a 36-43 record, making them one of the biggest disappointments in the majors this year. New York is stationed in fourth place and firmly out of the playoff picture.
That stings given that the Mets own the highest payroll in Major League Baseball by a wide margin. They are spending $344.2 million this season, while the San Diego Padres a second at $245.8 million.
“I don’t think it solves anything, other than it gives people a one-day story. But it doesn’t really solve anything. There’s plenty of blame to go around from a performance point of view. So blowing up, I’m not sure it solves anything,” Cohen added.
