(New York, NY) — Perhaps the most famous jacket that Michael Jordan ever wore is selling for one-point-five million dollars.
That was the winning bid Wednesday for Jordan’s 1992 Dream Team jacket at Sotheby’s in New York City.
The six-time NBA champion highlighted the 1992 Dream Team that was arguably the best squad assembled in basketball history. The team, which featured 11 Hall of Fame players, went 8-0.
Jordan wore the jacket while accepting his Olympic gold medal in Barcelona, but the item actually became iconic because of what he was trying hide while donning it. Michael draped an American flag over the right side of the jacket during the medal ceremony to hide the Reebok logo on his jersey.
Following the ceremony, Jordan tossed it to Brian McIntyre, who held onto it for nearly 31 years.
“I certainly don’t want it,” he told McIntyre.
“I’ve enjoyed it and it’s just the right time to do this,” McIntyre said before the auction. “And it’s easier to do this than it is to leave things for my kids.”
The jacket was estimated to fetch anywhere from $1 million to $3 million.
Jordan was aware of the decision.
