(Staten Island, NY) – New York City baseball has largely been a disappointment this year – but not for the Big Apple’s “forgotten borough.”

The Staten Island FerryHawks swept a doubleheader against the Charleston Dirty Birds at home on Wednesday, entering a three-way tie for first place in the Atlantic League’s North Division.

Both Lancaster and Southern Maryland are tied with Staten Island. All three squads entered play on Thursday with identical 19-15 records.

The FerryHawks dropped game one of their series with Charleston on Tuesday, but then won both ends of the doubleheader 9-0, and 8-5. Although the team’s overall record checks in at 41-57, the FerryHawks are easily the Atlantic League’s hottest squad, having won 10 of their previous 13 contests.

Staten Island has outscored the opposition 93 to 56 over that span.

Some of the stars of the doubleheader included starting pitcher Ofelky Peralta in game one. He allowed just two hits, striking out five batters and walking just one, across five scoreless frames. The hard-throwing Dominican righthander was previously employed by the San Francisco Giants and Baltimore Orioles organizations.

Bobby Sparling went deep in game one, while both Angel Aguilar and Luis Castro drove in runs.

For game two, Castro paced the attack, hitting his 14th home run – a grand slam during the first inning. Staten Island never looked back, and FerryHawks starter Anthony Quattrocchi kept the Dirty Birds lineup down for three innings – allowing 3 runs, and giving way to reliever Ryan Hartman who eventually got the win.

Thursday night at 6:30 pm the FerryHawks and the Dirty Birds play their series finale. A brief road trip will then follow, leading into a crucial six-game homestand.
