(East Rutherford, NJ) – Few things have gone right for the New York Giants this year. In fact, if not for a somewhat miraculous second-half comeback against the Arizona Cardinals, the team would be winless.
And as a part of that game’s furious comeback, Darren Waller caught 6 passes for 76 yards – which is more or less a baseline for what the team hoped they’d be getting by acquiring the former Pro Bowler from the Oakland Raiders.
Then, over the last two games, Waller hauled in just 3 passes for around 20 yards – with no TDs. In fact, Waller has failed to reach the end zone during any game this season. And all the while there have been reports suggesting he’s dealing with a debilitating nerve issue of some kind within his hamstring.
Now, Giants QB Daniel Jones says it’s paramount the team focus on getting Waller more involved. Jones told reporters “it’s important” to get Waller the ball, adding he has to “to do a better job of finding him.”
But simply targeting Waller may not be the issue – at least looking at the results to date. Or a least, that was true prior to last week – then the tight end was targeted just three times against the Seahawks. By comparison, during weeks 1-3, Waller was ranked fourth among the league’s tight ends in overall targets.
The Giants enter their matchup with Miami as 12 point underdogs in some sports books. Maybe that’s good luck for Waller – who wears number 12. That’s grasping at straws for sure, but Big Blue fans are desperate.
